Hillside Walk/Bike-to-School Program

Program Coordinator: Libby Moore (email)

Hillside's Walk/Bike-to-School Program began in 2009 when the school joined the Safe Routes to School Program. Our mission is to inspire students to walk or bike to school and educate the community about the benefits -- reducing carbon emissions, boosting fitness and strengthening community.

The current program has four main components:

1. Monthly Walk/Bike-to-School Days 2018-2019

  • Wednesday, September 12: Back-to-School Stride
  • Wednesday, October 10: International Walk-to-School Day
  • Thursday, November 1: Autumn Amble
  • Friday, December 7: Winter Walk
  • Tuesday, January 8: Polar Bear Prowl
  • Friday, February 8: Chilly Charge (rescheduled from 2/7)
  • Friday, March 8: March Madness
  • Tuesday, April 2: Spring Saunter
  • Wednesday, May 1: Massachusetts Walk-to-School  Day
  • Wednesday, May 8: National Bike-to-School Day
  • Friday, June 6: Summer Stroll

2. The Golden Sneaker Award -- This coveted trophy is awarded each month to the class that has the most walkers or bikers during the monthly walk/bike to school day.

3. Walker/Biker-of-the-Month Profiles -- Every month we profile a regular walker or biker. We ask the student to answer a few questions, take his/her picture, and post the profile in the Hillside lobby.

4. Footloose Fridays -- Walk or bike to school every Friday. Make a commitment to a healthy, environmentally friendly and fun journey to school.
